AZ Pro & College Sports
Cardinals, Coyotes, D-Backs & More
There is no shortage of sports in the desert. Casual fans and die-hards alike are met with year-round excitement and entertainment ranging from the pros to Division I college athletics.
All four major sports – football, baseball, basketball, and hockey – are well represented in the Valley of the Sun.
Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks since their inaugural season in 1998, features a retractable roof – the first of its kind in the United States.
Literally just down the street from Chase Field, travelers will find Talking Stick Resort Arena, home to Arizona's first professional sports franchise, the Phoenix Suns of the NBA.
Of course what would any sports town be without a tradition of great football? Just outside of the capital, Glendale is home to the Arizona Cardinals. University of Phoenix Stadium has proudly given the 'Cards their raucous home field advantage since 2006, while also featuring a retractable roof for climate control and maximum comfort on game day.
The city of Glendale also houses Arizona’s professional hockey team, the Arizona Coyotes – residents of Gila River Arena since 2003.
The beautiful state of Arizona also is home to a plethora of competitive, exciting college athletics. In Tempe, visit Arizona State University and take in a PAC-12 sporting event. The Sun Devils compete in all major college sports – most notably winning recent national championships in men's baseball and wrestling.
Just down Interstate 10 in southern Arizona you'll find the University of Arizona – where the Wildcats and their high-flying men's basketball team are dunking their way into the NCAA tournament almost annually. In Tucson, you can visit the McKale Center for a basketball game, or catch the former Pac-12 champion football team at Arizona Stadium.
Arizona sports are also synonymous with Major League Baseball's Cactus League spring training. Fifteen Major League teams compete in the Phoenix area every spring from March to the beginning of April. Take in a game at one of ten ball parks spread throughout the valley including Cubs Park, Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, Scottsdale Stadium, Peoria Sports Complex, and more.
