Visiting Tucson & Southern Arizona
The people of Tucson and southern Arizona aren't afraid of a little summer heat. This season, an abundance of special events, festivals, and activities help visitors find a sense of Tucson's rich culture. And after a Sonoran Desert adventure, communities from Safford to Douglas to Yuma are welcoming respites with plenty to offer visitors.
Thrill seekers won't want to miss the chance to free-fall 12,000 feet through the air. SkyDive Arizona, just south of Casa Grande in Eloy, welcomes skydivers of all skill levels, and the facility's remote location allows for the largest drop zone in the world. It's the perfect place for first timers to try one of the most exciting activities known to man.
Further south along Interstate 10, Tucson is known as a haven for creative types, and Second Saturdays are their time to shine. Taking over Congress Street between Toole Avenue and Church Avenue on the second saturday of each month this year, Second Saturdays events showcase the works of local artists across several media, while vendors, street performers, and live bands help to draw in passersby.
Tucson’s Kino Sports Complex is also home to FC Tucson, a member of the Premier Development League. Check the schedule during your visit to catch FC Tucson evening home games at the Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium.
August brings the 2016 Tucson Bird & Wildlife Festival. Presented by the Tucson Audubon Society, the festival takes place August 11th through 14th, promising field trips, workshops and the Sky Islands Birding Cup. Discover southern spectacular Arizona outdoor destinations and bird life in Saguaro National Park, Catalina State Park and the Huachuca Mountains among others.
Safford, one of eastern Arizona’s tri-cities along with Pima and Thatcher, is the seat of Graham County. Just four miles from Safford, Eastern Arizona Community College fills the region with student life, athletics and culture in August as students return to campus and EAC Monsters football begins. Visit Safford over Labor Day Weekend and test your summer training at the 2016 Tri Community Tri, August 27th.
