Visiting Northern Arizona
With summer highs that barely scrape the low 80s, communities like Prescott, Sedona, Winslow, and Show Low offer a wooded, paradisiacal retreat from the heat of the south – not to mention boundless small-town charm and quick access to some of the world’s most well-known geological attractions.
Flagstaff commands northern Arizona as the region’s most populous city. Northern Arizona University students are away on summer break, but the city is still alive with activity. All year, First Friday Art Walks are a great way to experience Flagstaff’s historic downtown area, as is the 20th Annual Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce Fourth of July Parade. From 9 a.m. to noon on July 4th, over 100 floats, bands, and local dignitaries circle downtown’s quaint streets.
Williams, just 40 miles west of Flagstaff, is rooted in historic Route 66 culture. Get a sense of that history by having a drink and seeing a show at the World Famous Sultana before browsing numerous boutiques and dining in restaurants themed after the nenowned roadway. Williams is also home to Bearizona, a drive-through wildlife preserve, which lets you get up close to Black bears, Tundra wolves, Brown bison, and more – all from the safety of your vehicle.
What’s more, Williams can serve as the launch pad to a Grand Canyon adventure, with Grand Canyon Jeep Tours or the storied Williams Depot, from which visitors can embark on a ride along the canyon walls on the Grand Canyon Railway. To be able to take your car right up to the edge of the canyon, stay in Grand Canyon Villiage, just south of the south rim.
For more outdoor adventures amid northern Arizona’s stunning redrock, make Page your basecamp for a visit to Lake Powell or the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Summertime is the season to get take advantage of scenic boating and other water sports on Lake Powell, while the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is perfect for an unforgettable hiking or backpacking excursion.
