Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument
Hike the Sunset Crater National Monument
Surrounded by the Coconino National Forest in Flagstaff, the Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument is the youngest and least-eroded cinder cone in the San Francisco volcanic field.
Over the last 6 million years, this field has produced more than 600 volcanoes, while Sunset Crater Volcano is estimated to have erupted between 1040 and 1100 AD.
Although hiking to the summit is not permitted, the two self-guided, one-mile hiking trails allow you to climb a cinder cone and explore a volcanic formation.
The Monument is located 12 miles north of Flagstaff, in northern Arizona. Flagstaff is an ideal lodging location, providing comfortable accommodations, while visiting Northern Arizona.
